My First Speaking Engagement as Microsoft MVP :)

I received a text message from Mellie Valimento asking me if I’m available on the January 27, 2011 to have a Windows 7 tips and tricks at a student’s IT conference.  Mellie is the one in-charge of the academic team and student partners at Microsoft Philippines.  Without hesitation I answered yes, little that I know, I will be addressing an IT student’s convention with over a thousand delegates from different schools.

January 27, 2011 around 11 AM, we (Mellie, Marion an MSP, and I) left the congested Manila for Olongapo City.  We arrived at the Olongapo City Convention Center at around 1:30PM due to some direction difficulties, 30 minutes late from the original 1PM call time. By the way the said convention is the Student Conference on IT Education 2011 organized by the Philippine Society of Information Technology Educators (Region 3 Chapter). It’s a yearly gathering of students and IT educators to showcase their expertise and to have updates in the upcoming technologies in the tech world. After the usual welcome and courtesies the host introduced me, she’s a little bit surprised  to know that a Medical Technologist is also a Microsoft MVP will address a bunch of IT students and educators.  I proceeded immediately with Windows 7 overview followed by a live demo, tips, and tricks.  Since we were late I was just given around 15 minutes for my discussion and demo.  My time is a little bit too short but I guess it was well spent, I just hope that the students learned something on that 15 minutes. :)

Below are some pictures taken from the conference.

How to Extend your Windows 7 Jumplists!

By default the jumplist in Windows 7 will show you 10 recently opened files / items.  Extending it might be useful .

Here’s how to extend your jumplist:

•Right Click Start button image

•Click on Properties

image

•In the Start Menu tab click Customize

image

•Then change the value of the Number of recent items to display in the Jumplist

•Then Click OK

Hold Shift key to Reveal the Secrets

This was my lecture / demo last January 4, 2011 during the windows7ako new year party..

Ever wondered how to open a command prompt in any folder without typing the full path? How about having an extended sent to menu?

The SHIFT key will be your companion to unlock those secrets in your Windows 7.  By default if you right click a folder you can’t find an option that says “Open command window here.”  By holding the SHIFT key and right click a specific folder you can open an new command window containing the full path of that specific folder.

The “Send to” menu will just give you a few options to where you can send or transfer you files or folders.   What if I tell that by just pressing the SHIFT key and right clicking a file or folder, will give you an expanded Send to menu as shown below..

That’s just it! Unleash the power of your SHIFT key! :)

Talking about starting the year right! :)

The day was January 2, 2011, I turned on my phone’s WiFi connected to the cloud and checked my mailbox and SURPRISE! An email with a tittle line “Congratulations 2011 Microsoft MVP!”  immediately opened my notebook to read the email in full view.  It’s true I’m not dreaming, I’m now a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional for Windows Expert – Consumer.

The Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) Award is an annual award given to outstanding members of Microsoft's technical communities based on contributions made during the previous 12 months to offline and online Microsoft-related technical communities.

I started as an active member of the Windows7ako, a Microsoft online community created before the public debut of then much awaited Windows 7.  I started as a participant on events, had friends in the community, met some Microsoft execs, next thing I know I’m already a facilitator and a co- organizer of events and also visiting school campuses introducing and discussing different Microsoft technologies like Widows 7, MS Office, Windows Live, etc.  Next thing happened, Mr. Jojo Ayson, a Microsoft vetearan and also an MVP, is asking me to to fill out a nomination form for MVP.  It took him sometime, I think he waited for months to submit the nomination, according to him I need more credentials to be considered.  And here it is, seems he got the right time when he submitted the nomination! :)

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jojo Ayson for the nomination, Ms. Chay Saputil and Ms. Liezl Milan for all the support, and to my friends in the community  Erwin (Kambal), Jeffrey, Dexter, Christopher and to the Almighty who’s the source of all that is good.
