Slowing Recently? Configure your Disk Defragmenter to do it’s job regularly

In Wikipedia fragmentation is described as ,

“When the operating system cannot or will not allocate enough contiguous space to store a complete file as a unit, but instead puts parts of it in gaps between other files (usually those gaps exist because they formerly held a file that the operating system has subsequently deleted or because the operating system allocated excess space for the file in the first place). Larger files and greater numbers of files also contribute to fragmentation and consequent performance loss.”

This is one of the reason why your PC being slow or has decreased performance. The built -in Disk Defragmenter in Windows 7 will help your PC get back into track.  This utility was already introduced in the previous versions of Windows but PC users sometimes take disk fragmentation for granted and end up having a slow computer.  Defragging your drive will cost you a lot of time so why not schedule it on a different time when you’re computer is idle and you are doing things like cleaning your room or eating lunch!

Windows 7 automatically configures Disk Defragmenter to schedule defragment to run once a week, usually at 1am on Wednesday but I’m asleep at that time and cant afford to leave my PC turned on.  So I need to schedule the defragging at my convenience.  To open the defrag utility, in your Start menu search box type in defrag and click on Disk Defragmenter.

image

Click on Configure Schedule and then you can set your defragging in either Daily, Weekly and Monthly and to what day or time would you like your PC to initiate the defragging process.  You can also select the disks to be defragged if you are using more that one disk or multiple partitions.  As for me I set my Disk Defragmenter to run every 15th of the month at 12 noon, since I know that more likely I would be eating lunch at that time and my PC will be idle.

image

Click on OK button and your done.  The next thing you’ll going to notice will be your PC a little bit speedier than when it was fragmented! :)

Installing the Windows 7 SP1 Beta

After downloading the much anticipated Service Pack for Windows 7, here comes the installation.  So let’s see, I have Windows 7 Enterprise installed on my notebook with AMD Athlon Neo dual core processor, 2 GB of RAM, 320 GB of hard disk space.  Should my specs be enough?

As per checking, Installation requirements of the Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 is the same as the requirements for installation of the Windows 7 RTM (1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor,  1 GB of RAM (32-bit) / 2 GB RAM (64-bit),  16 GB available disk space (32-bit) / 20 GB (64-bit), DirectX 9 graphics processor with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver, and DVD-compatible drive).  This time the only requirement that you need to comply with, is that an RTM version of Windows 7 must be installed in your system to cater the installation of the SP1.  So does my notebook complied with the requirements? Yes! So let’s install the SP1 Beta!

Before installing the  SP1, it is recommended that you have to backup your current settings or your system.  Though Microsoft assured that we can always uninstall the SP1, creating an image of your system will be enough for easy restoration should any problems will occur after the SP1 installation.  After backing up your system, you may now proceed with the installation.

The SP1 comes in a 1.2 GB ISO file.  Either you’ll burn the file in a blank DVD or just mount it in your virtual drive.  The ISO file includes both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the SP1 Beta for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.

To start with the installation, you must close or exit all running programs and applications so that it won’t interfere with the setup process.  Below is the step by step screenshot of the setup process.

Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Beta

The IT community has been anticipating the release of the Service Pack 1 of of the best selling operating system Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.  Now the waiting is over as the Beta release of the Service Pack 1 (SP1) is already available for testing.  Target population of the SP1 Beta are IT people who wants to test  the pre-release of the SP1.

sp1 build

I just installed the SP1 Beta into my netbook to see how it goes, is it stable? Will improve my PC performance? That remains to be seen.  According to Microsoft the SP1 Beta is a compendium of the previously released updates (based on end users’ feedback) for Windows 7 and Sever 2008 R2.  As per documentation from Microsoft the SP1 contains almost 500 hotfixes and security updates for Windows 7.  After installing the service pack I noticed that my bootup is now faster than before (I’m using Windows 7 Enterprise).   Also, one noticeable change is the watermark appearance at the right bottom corner of my desktop that says, “Windows 7 Evaluation copy. Build 7601”, a number higher than the original Windows 7 RTM build 7600.

My Red Fox Goodie Bag!

I recently joined a photo contest in Red Fox’s Facebook page entitled Red Fox Moment.  It was Resly, a fellow community member from windows7ako, gave me an idea when he asked me to “like” his nephew’s photo in the Red Fox page.  The purpose being is to gain the highest votes and get the grand prize, a brand new Red Fox 1020i Netbook! A day before the deadline that was June 24, 2010 I decided to take a photo of me holding a Red Fox CPU like the god Atlas, posted it on the Red Fox page in Facebook and ask some friends to vote for it.  I’ve got a total of 19 votes from my friends!  Winking smile  The 19 votes is nothing compared to the 1510 votes of the winner, Lily Bartlett!  I just joined for fun and try my luck, after all the Red Fox admin told us that representatives from Red Fox will choose 5 entries based on the photo’s appeal and creativity.  Those 5 entries will get a Red Fox goodie bag as a consolation price!

Here’s my photo entry… Smile

redfox

Last July 1, 2010 the Red Fox admin announced the winners and again Resly was the one to break the good news to me, telling me that I was one of the 5 lucky winners to received a Red Fox goodie bag! One of the admin of the page sent me a private message in Facebook on July 2, 2010 confirming that I really won! In the message she’s asking for some personal information for me to claim the prize.  At first I hesitated to reply since the message came from an individual claiming to be the Admin of the Red Fox page! What if this person is a hoax and just wanted to get my details so that she can claim my prize?  Anyways I did replied haha. SmileThree days after my reply I got a text message asking me to drop by at Red Fox concept store at SM North Cyberzone on July 7, 2010  at 5:30 pm to claim my Red Fox goodie bag!

July 7, 2010, I took a train from my workplace to SM North Cyberzone to claim my prize! I arrived at the concept store too early so I took a stroll at the Cyperzone looking for technologies from different concept stores.  I went back to the Red Fox concept store at around 6 PM to claim my prize.  There were three of us who claimed our prize, they took photos of us receiving our prize before they let us go Smile.  And that’s just it!  Thanks Red Fox!

And here’s my Red Fox goodies…

How to: Make Your Command Prompt Window Wider

Getting annoyed or tired dragging the scrollbar of your command prompt every time you can’t read everything because the window is not wide enough?  There’s an easy solution to that, you can make the command prompt window wider! But how? Some Windows users might not know this so I’ll show you how to make the window wider in just a few clicks! Winking smile

cmd1

Here’s How:

Open your command prompt. In Windows 7 just type “cmd” (without the strings) in the search bar of your start menu and hit the Enter key.  In older versions of Windows, you need to click Start, click Run and type in “cmd” (again without the strings) and hit Enter and the command prompt window will open.

cmd2

Right click on the command prompt boarder and click Properties…

cmd3

In the properties window, click on the Layout tab and change the Window Size to your preference (default width is 80).  You can also change the Window Position and Screen Buffer.  Click OK when you’re done.

cmd4

Now after modifying you command prompt properties, your new settings will be automatically applied to your current command prompt window after clicking the OK button.

Wishing for an Arc Mouse? Here is your chance!

I’ve been using my Microsoft Arc Mouse since I got it from Microsoft for FREE in one of their trivia contest in windows7ako.com (the official Philippines’ Windows 7 Facebook page).  The Arc Mouse is not just an ordinary mouse, I can describe it as sexy and sophisticated, not to mention a source of envy among my friends.  It’s unique and really designed for portability since you can fold it, not like the other mice which is bulky!

Now if you want to have one, here is your chance but it’s not for free!  Branches of Silicon Valley in SM North and SM Megamall has this Arc Mouse trade-in promo. Just swap your working or non-working mouse (any brand) and get 30% off from the original price of the Arc Mouse!  That’s less PhP 900.00 from the original PhP 3,000.00 price, so you’ll get to pay PhP 2,100.00 only.

arc

PhP 2,100.00 is still a high price than that of it’s wireless mouse competitors but it’s a little bit tempting because of it’s sexy and sophisticated design! It’s good I already have one, or else I will have to go at SM North and get one! Smile with tongue out

This promo runs from June 23 to July 31, 2010 only!

Live Essential Beta… Better and Improved!

Now that the new Live Essentials is here, let’s take a look on how improved it is and how will it help me to make may daily tasks easier than ever.

Live Writer Beta

writer1

Of all the applications included in the Live Essentials, the Writer is very useful to me.  Since I blog every now and then, the Writer is my companion in writing my articles and publishing it to my blogs (www,needlehandler.blogspot.com and www.techiemt.spaces.live.com).  The Writer is way better than the online editor of my blog accounts for it has more tools to make my article better looking.  The first noticeable improvement of the Writer is the ribbon which is a feature that you can only see in Microsoft Office.   If a may say, it’s like a MS Word Lite edition for there’s already paragraph formatting, spelling checker, html styles, and best of all, the Writer has now picture editing tool!  Now I don’t have to use third party software to edit pictures to be included to my blog.  The funny thing added is, I can now insert emoticons which I find it cool! Smile The Writer is now more intelligent than it’s predecessor!

Live Photo Gallery Beta

photo 1

Like the Writer the most noticeable change in Photo Gallery is the ribbon.  Organizing and sharing your photos is now easier using face recognition, tags, and keywords.  Lots of tools are added like the pre-set picture effects, picture tagging, the retouch feature wherein the program will automatically replace any imperfection in the picture that I want it to be removed, of course my favorite photo stitch for making my awesome panoramic photos is still there.  I can also share my favorite photos in Windows Live, Facebook, Flickr, and YouTube.

Live Mail Beta

For those who are using MS Office Home and Student which doesn’t have an Outlook.  The Live Mail is a good alternative!  Like the MS Outlook, Live mail also allows you to  manage multiple e‑mail accounts—Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo! Mail and more—in one program. Access your e‑mail, contacts and calendar even when you're offline.  I really never used the Live Mail for I used Outlook on my email accounts.  Now if you can’t afford to get an Outlook better settle for the Live Mail which has an Outlook Like  functionality than nothing at all Smile

mail

Live Movie Maker Beta

I seldom use this application from the Live Essentials, but with the looks of it making or compiling a movie clip is easy.  The AutoMovie feature is a proof that making your movies out of your videos and photos is a lot easy.  Features like transitions, effects and themes will make your movie more appealing. After compiling your movie you can always share it to your friends via Live sky drive, YouTube and the phenomenal Facebook!

Live Messenger Beta

The Messenger has a complete makeover! Though the messenger is in the main stream for sometime, I have never seen it like this!  With the new messenger, I’m up to date on what’s happening with my network!  I can see updates from my Facebook  and my Windows Live account!  Pictures and videos uploaded by my friends in social networking sites like Facebook is displayed on the left panel of my Messenger, for me to view while chatting! Smile

messenger

Live Sync Beta

This is the new addition in the family and the replacement of the Live Mesh (I think Smile with tongue out).  A very useful program to synchronize you files when you are using 3 or more PCs like me.  Transferring and  copying files from my laptop to my desktop and to my work PC is hassle for me.  I can still remember I bought a flash drive to store my documents for ease of access.  Just plug it into one of my PCs, edit and update it, and copy it again to my laptop.  With Live Sync, I’ll just add the file or folder for synchronization, add the devices where I want that file or folder to be synchronized, select if I want to have an online copy too (to be stored in Sky Drive) and that’s it!  As soon as I open my synchronized device it will connect to the cloud, download, sync, and update my files and fielders.  The online copy stored in my Sky Drive is useful when incidentally I didn’t bring my laptop with me, I can just access it in an internet cafĂ© edit it via Office Web Apps, save it and share it!  Program settings form Internet Explorer and MS Office can also me synchronized!  Accessing my other PC is also possible via Remote Access feature of the Live Sync.   This a very cool application I’ll never know what to do again if Live Sync will be gone.  There’s one thing that disappoints me, and a big question for me too, why is it that Live Mesh ahs a dedicated 5 GB of online storage while the new Live Sync has only 2 GB? I hope in the final release of the New Windows Live Essentials the 5 GB online storage will be restored Smile

sync

All I can say is that Live Essentials is simpler, better, safer, awesome and AMAZING!
